Established in 1990 to participate in United States Government contracts set aside under the AbilityOne Program, formerly known as the Javits-Wagner-O’Day (JWOD) Program, Calidad is an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit organization affiliated with Goodwill Industries of the Greater East Bay. Calidad provides paid on-the-job skills training and job placement services to persons with severe and long-term disabilities.
The AbilityOne Act promotes training and employment of individuals with severe physical, mental, or psychological impairments. Calidad Industries serves as a participating Non-Profit Agency (NPA) defined in this legislation, and receives periodic compliance reviews by federal agencies Calidad workers with disabilities perform 75 percent of all direct labor used to complete the services required on the contract. Our vocational training program also provides Life Skills Workshops specifically developed to encourage personal and vocational growth, leading to future opportunities for competitive employment.
Calidad workers are paid competitive wages depending on the type of contract and the position. Workers receive up to 30 hours of work per week and are paid based on their productivity. The contracts are federal and therefore set a minimum wage for the contract. Calidad Industries does not pay wages below the state-set minimum wage and most workers are earning living wages according to their local economy. Calidad workers also receive fully-paid medical, dental, and vision healthcare coverage and vacation and holiday benefits in accordance with the federal Service Contract Act.
