2017 John Latchford Award Winner – Doug Palmer

When Doug Palmer was announced as the winner of the 2017 John Latchford Award at Goodwill’s staff meeting, the room lit up with applause and cheers.

The Latchford Award, named for Goodwill Industries of the Greater East Bay’s CEO of 16 years, is given annually to one employee who embodies the Goodwill mission in their work. The recipient lives a purposeful life and helps those around them through the mission as well.

Doug, Goodwill’s Director of Facilities, Safety, & Loss Control, drives 145 miles each way to work every day to lead his team in the upkeep of retails stores, warehouses, office buildings, and job service centers. And if he’s asked to oversee a new function of the company, he does so with his always-positive outlook and can-do attitude. “If I can help, if it’s in the best interest of the agency, I want to do it,” says Doug.

When asked what he thought about winning the Latchford Award, he says he was humbled, “I felt there were others more deserving.” Gauging from the reaction in the room when his name was announced, everyone else believed the recipient was well-chosen.

“I enjoy what I’m doing,” says Doug, “it’s important to have people who really care about what they’re doing. I like that this job gives me the ability to help people and I like supporting a company that gives so many the opportunity to get back to work and live a purposeful life.”
