“I am a felon…Sounds scary I know. Feels even scarier at times when you think about it too hard. The biggest challenge I have faced so far in my journey through re-entry back into society is how potential employers may receive this news. It is a make or break moment if there ever was one.”
Paula used these words to describe the challenges that come with being labeled a felon. People make mistakes, and sometimes those mistakes result in labels that can be hard to shake, especially when you’re looking for work. The obstacles that come with these labels can be hard to overcome, and many people with barriers to employment often give up hope before they’re given the opportunity to demonstrate growth and improvement.
Instead of letting that label chart the course of her life, Paula chose to push past those barriers and change the narrative. She found hope working for Goodwill. “I have learned that people are willing to accept you for who you are and not by your past. Goodwill turns donations into jobs and that could not be more true.”
As Paula prepares to embark on her next professional journey, she offers the following reflection: “I am a believer that everything happens for a reason. My time at Goodwill is a perfect example of that. It has not only helped me in the present, but has also provided a direction to go in the future.” Paula is living proof that second chances save lives. She is a prime example of overcoming adversity and making positive changes to generate life-changing results. She is rebuilding her life, one brick at a time, and all it took to kick-start her progress was a desire to change and an employer willing to give her a shot at a second chance.
Our Mission is to Turn Donations into Jobs so that people like Paula can take the first step toward sustainable employment. Compassion and understanding are catalysts for change, and we exist to provide a forum for transformation. Everyone deserves a second chance, and Paula illustrates just how transformative a second chance can be.
